The incident occurred on Friday, April 14, at the Shelton downtown Post Office.
According to Det. Christopher Nugent of the Shelton Police, an elderly went to the downtown Post Office and used the drop mailbox when an unknown Hispanic man entered the rear seat of her vehicle and asked her for money.
The victim gave the suspect money and after the suspect, identified as Francisco Delgado, age 33, of Shelton, told the victim to get out of the vehicle.
Delgado then drove away in the victim’s vehicle. The victim was not injured and no weapon was displayed, Nugent said.
Officers and detectives immediately began an investigation into this incident.
Detectives developed Delgado as a suspect shortly after the crime occurred. The information was passed on to Shelton patrol officers and area police departments.
On Saturday morning, Officer Rob Franco was on routine patrol when he spotted the victim’s stolen vehicle on Howe Avenue in the area of Route 8 being driven by Delgado, Nugent said.
A short time later Officer Franco located the car with Delgado walking away.
Officer Franco gave chase and responding officers converged on the scene and were able to apprehend Delgado in a wooded area by Roberts Street.
He was charged with
- Robbery
- Theft of a vehicle
- Interfering with an officer
Delgado is being held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, April 17.
